CairnGorm Mountain - Thu 21st Apr 2016
Posted by: Skitourer at 11.33hrs on Fri 22nd Apr 16
:: Tour Route(s) or Location Skied/Ridden
Car park to pt1141, round Corries to Lurchers
:: Weather Conditions
Overcast to white out. Breezy, above freezing. Bluebird day once we were down!
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
Extensive consistent spring snow. Better cover than when we skied to Macdui in mid March. Skis on at the 2nd zigzag and not off again till the bottom of Lurchers. Great for Nordic touring kit, not soggy but quite slow which was helpful in the white out.

Cairngorm

First of all there must be some other tourers out there holding out against letting Facebook be the forum of choice for Scottish ski tourers. If you are one of them please post a tour here.

Skinned from the car park towards point 1141 however changed to going via the top of the Ptarmgan tow due to wind.
:: Weather Conditions
Forecast was 40mph on tops which was right enough. Next to no vis at top.

. Lovely clear start, skinned up Faicaill ridge on good snow when down came the clag. Reached Cairngorm top and back down to the Ptarmigan bowl on compass bearing. Coffee in cafe then down Ciste to 500m. Thick snow though a bit heavy for my skinnies and 3 pin bindings. Others did somewhat better.
A good couple of days and my start to the season. Let's hope it just gets better.
:: Weather Conditions

Cairngorm car park, Coire Cas, Ptarmigan, Cairngorm Summit. Our first descent before 11am south of east had the best spring snow. Our second descent north of east was longer (200m). From the bottom we could see the blocky snow that had slipped and avalanched on The Saddle slabs. We returned by the top of Ciste Meredith
:: Weather Conditions
Calm and easy
:: Snow Conditions and Distrubtion
There has been dramatic snow loss since the posting on the Cairngorm page on 9 May. In particular the traverse to Coire Cas is snowless for 100m. The snow in the Gunbarrel starts at the first pylon although this is only 20/25 min from the car park.
